The Big Conn is out now on Apple TV +! It was directed by James Lee Hernandez and Brian Lazarte who were also the directors of HBO’s 5-time Emmy-nominated documentary miniseries McMillions. I had to pleasure to co-score this crazy-yet-true series alongside Brian Tyler, Nathan Alexander, and Joshua Zimmerman.
The story is centered around Eric C. Conn, a social security lawyer from Kentucky who managed to orchestrate the largest Social Security fraud in United States history (and yes, his last name really is “Conn”). While Eric’s antics are hilarious at times, there was a very real devastating fallout from his actions, especially felt by those who lost their social security benefits with most of them being disabled. But audiences should not be so quick to condemn, as there are always gray areas to consider.
Eric Conn considered himself a James Bond-type figure so the score at times gives a subtle and silly nod to that iconic sound. In the more serious moments, piano and strings are front and center, sonically evoking the pain felt by the people who lost everything.
This docuseries is a wild ride and a must-watch – enjoy!
